Gypsy Road

The smell of cheese and old garlic filled Kayla's nose. Bershetta was one of her favorite snacks. Finding the bag of Romona tomatoes in the refrigerator, Kayla took out the six tomatoes and placed them on the cutting board. She turned to grab a knife and saw Fred standing behind her.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
She hadn't seen him since yesterday, and when she came into the kitchen just ten minutes ago to find him nowhere, the disappointment had been nearly palpable. Every morning Kayla would wake up to the sound of Fred's voice. It was strange to wake up to silence this morning. It was more strange that Fred spent the morning at the Galaxy rock club auditioning for Cinderella. She and Fred are close friends with the band and Kayla thought it would make things awkward if Fred auditioned and Cinderella decided to go with a different drummer. Fred was excited to finally have an opportunity to play drums in a band and Kayla was sure that Tom wouldn't take it into consideration.
Fred picked up a tomato and held it up to her. "Did you know," he cocked an eyebrow, "That in ancient Rome, the thumbs-down meant the crowd favored the gladiator in the arena?"
"No, I can't say I knew that."
Putting the tomato back on the cutting board, he squared himself in front of her. "If I were a Roman emperor, I'd give you..." He jabbed his thumb toward the floor. "A thumbs-down."
"So, you'd favor me?"
He crossed his arms over his chest. "Totally."
"Aren't you supposed to be somewhere, Freddie?"
"No, actually." He smiled.
