Kayla lit four candles she'd found in Cheyenne's private bathroom and, within a few seconds, the melting wax threw a vanilla scent around her. With the TV and ceiling light off, her bedroom glowed and the waving candle flames cast odd shadows around her as she layed in her bed.
Kayla folded her notebook open to the next page and poised her pen over the blank page.
"Shit," Kayla whispered to herself, pulling a strand of hair behind her ear. Her imagination drew a blank.
The sound of a dense tree branch cracking and thudding against the dirt brought Kayla to her feet.
Kayla's heart raced as she approached her bedroom window. The pine tree in the front yard covered the evening sky. An icy draft surrounded her when she opened the window to peak out.
Kayla let out an ear-piercing squeal when she saw hands grasp the window sill. She repelled several steps when her company pulled himself up, climbing into her bedroom.
Tom stood before Kayla, out of breath and exhausted. A green leaf was caught in his hair.
"Tom? What the hell are you doing here?"
"I need to talk to you... you've been avoiding me..."
Kayla swallowed, and felt her face warm with unease.
When Tom caught his breath, he closed the window and sat on the edge of Kayla's bed. Kayla slid in beside him, bringing her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around her legs.
then what?
