There's No Place Like Home, Don't You Know?

(Kayla, 1983)

With Cheyenne and our new roommate, Robin, at work, I blinked a lot and made a phone call to a friend back in New York. I told Star that i had a horrific headache, blurred vision, and dizziness. Man, I deserved a day off and i didn't feel like looking for a job today. Maybe the whole week. Enduring the first day in a new town with a hangover was more than any twenty-year-old should be requried to bear.

Stifiling hot air swallowed me up the moment I stepped into the glaring Birch Falls sun. I lowered Puck to the pavement and watched him sniff and hop around, his tiny feet scorched on the scalding cement.

"You asked for it," I said.

My forehead was already sweating into my hair. My lungs even felt hot. But soon, as before, the heat felt good. It calmed me, in spite of myself.
