"Do you think Tom's mad at me?" Georgeanne asked. "I didn't think he would mind if I told you that he said you might be the mother of my niece or nephew. I thought he'd laugh."
Kayla was sitting behind Georgeanne, braiding her long, dark hair. "Of course he's not mad at you. Don't worry about it, okay? I thought it was funny."
"He really likes you, you know." She spread out her aching legs and glared into the fire. It was late and the fire was hardly cracking, the wood burning in only a few places. "He told me that he wanted to buy you a ring. I see that he has, but he told me about it a few months ago. Are you going to marry him? If he asked you?"
Kayla slid the scrunchy from her wrist and twisted it around Georgeanne's hair. She smiled. "I don't think he'll ask me anytime soon. This is just a promise ring, Georgeanne. It's a promise that... maybe one day we will get married. But not right now. You know more than anyone how dedicated tom is to his music. That's what he's focused on right now. Not me. Maybe in a few years, when we have a nice house and Tom is on vacation from the tour. Stand up, now. I'm finished. Do you wanna look?"
Georgeanne reached for the compact mirror on the coffee table and held it over her head. "Thanks,"
