Happy Dayz

She went across the hall and knocked on Cheyenne's door.
"Come in," Cheyenne called from the other side.
When Kayla went in, Cheyenne said hi to her from her vanity mirror as she swooped her hair back into pigtails. There was a hint of blush on her cheeks. A swoop of mascara on her lashes. And a dab of pink shadow on her eye lids.
Kayla sat down on the edge of Cheyenne's perfectly made bed. Across the hall, her purple comforter was practically hanging on the floor.
Cheyenne ran a comb through her hair. "What are you doing in here?"
Sighing, Kayla picked at a loose string on the bed comforter. "I'm bored..."
"Bummer," Cheyenne said absently, more involved with her hair than her friend's boredom. When her hair was perfect, she sat down next to Kayla. "I'd do something with you, but Eric is coming over to watch a movie."
Kayla grabbed the pink pillow from the head of Cheyenne's bed. She ran her hand down the velvet material, watching the sway of fabric change. "What movie?"
"You're not allowed to come out of your room. Sorry."
Kayla scrunched up her face. "Please!"
"No! Eric doesn't like you and you'd scare him away."
Kayla growled and headed back into her room. She picked up the phone and dialed Tom's number.
"Yeah?" He answered.
"Hey! Tom! It's Kayla."
"Kayla?" Pots and pans banged in the background. A woman's voice barked out an order, "Tom, get those pans away from Jared, please!"
"I'm busy, Liz!" Tom barked back.
"Umm... Are you busy tonight?" Kayla sat down on her bed and propped one foot up on the edge of the night stand. "Do you want to get out? We could do something."
"Yeah, of course!" he said.
"Great!"

"Hey, Kay," Tom said, running a hand through his dark hair. Tom was a good-looking guy. He had a model's face: strong jawline, high cheek bones, full lips, and icy blue eyes.

Gorsh, a small restaurant just outside of Birch Falls, was packed. Conversation hung in the air, mixing with the crisp sound of fifties jazz playing from the jukebox.

Tom wove his arm around Kayla's shoulder and pulled her into his chest as they followed the hostess to their table.
